I was humbled to be allowed to give a presentation at the iMig Conference (International Mesothelioma Interest Group) in Philadelphia, USA on the Asbestos Victims Support Group Forum (UK)‘s campaign that Cape/Altrad pays £10 million towards medical research to find a cure for mesothelioma.

I was honoured to be joined by eminent Professors Prof Dean A. Fennell FMedSci and Peter Szlosarek, who both explained to the hundreds of delegates, in scientific terms, the dire need for funds.

iMig brings together the top medics and scientists from across the globe to find a cure for mesothelioma. As a lawyer and a daughter who lost her father to this cancer, which is widely regarded as one of the most severe as it is always deadly, there is a real urgency for a cure as rates of mesothelioma are increasing globally.

Recently, parliamentarians in the UK reported that Cape/Altrad should pay £10 million to fund medical research and that until it does so, the UK Government should refrain from awarding any public contracts to it.

I gave evidence in Parliament that it is currently the taxpayer who is having to fund the medical care which is provided to mesothelioma and other asbestos disease sufferers, via the under-resourced NHS. I invited the parliamentarians to consider whether it is ‘just and equitable’ for a company to continue to profit under such circumstances.

Read the parliamentary report here, which describes how Ran Oren imposed stringent conditions; and about Mohed Altrad, who was found guilty of corruption, including fraud and bribery, in the French courts: https://lnkd.in/enDGXNA8.
