AVSGF UK Members Meet MPs in Parliament

Representatives from Asbestos Victim Support Group (MAVS) along with colleagues from across the UK, met MPs in Parliament recently to discuss the work of the support groups and the legacy of asbestos which is still widely present in the UK. The afternoon was coordinated by Shelly Asquith from the TUC who provides the Secretariat for the All Party Parliamentary Group on Occupational Health.

This was an opportunity to raise current issues and talk about how we can work together to support their constituents. We discussed the Cape Must Pay campaign, demanding that Cape/Altrad, one of the largest manufacturers of asbestos products in the world, pays a donation of £10 million to Asthma + Lung UK towards medical research to find a cure for Mesothelioma. Cape/Altrad’s products were used in many buildings, including shops, hospitals and schools.

MAVSG has concern over the excessive delays with the DWP paying benefits to asbestos disease sufferers. There are numerous delays in paying the Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit and the lump sum payment under the Pneumoconiosis etc. (Workers’ Compensation) Act 1979 which causes financial hardship to the dying and extremely ill sufferers of asbestos disease and their families. We’d thank MPs Ian Byrne, Justine Madders and Ian Lavery for their time and support and look forward to working with them in the future.
